What Do Academics Need from their Editors?

Your client needs to know that your advice will be:

  • Current. You are aware of this year’s grant program eligibility and evaluation criteria, and are up-to-date on news about the funding agency. This may be because you are following relevant conversations on Twitter, or perhaps because you’re a member of the Canadian Association of Research Administrators.
  • Appropriate for their discipline. You are able to describe your experience editing for others in their discipline or in related fields. And, if you’ve edited grants in their discipline, you can make general comments about their peer reviewers.
  • Evidence-based. You're able to make recommendations that align with the ever-growing body of research on grant applications. The recommendations in this course have been drawn from the research literature, translated into best practices, and tailored to the Canadian research funding context.
